A modern application management portal for doctoral positions

TUM Apply is a web-based platform designed to simplify and centralize the recruitment process for doctoral candidates at the Technical University of Munich. It replaces fragmented workflows with a single, unified portal where research groups can post open positions, prospective candidates can discover and apply for them, and committees can efficiently manage the evaluation process. A key goal of the project is to attract more women and diverse candidates for dissertation projects at TUM, fostering a more inclusive research environment.
The project is sponsored by the Gender & Diversity Incentive Fund (GDIF).
The system supports the full application lifecycle: supervisors create and publish position listings with detailed requirements; applicants browse available positions, submit their materials, and track their application status; reviewers evaluate submissions through structured workflows with configurable criteria. This end-to-end approach reduces administrative overhead and ensures a transparent, consistent experience for all participants.
TUM Apply is open source and actively developed and deployed in a production environment at TUM. More information about the project, including technical documentation and contribution guidelines, can be found on our GitHub repository. The production instance is available at tumapply.aet.cit.tum.de, and detailed documentation is hosted at ls1intum.github.io/tum-apply.
